Tyumen is the administrative center of the Tyumen Region. The city is located in the Western Siberia on Tura River, affluence of the Tobol River. We have no reliable information on the city's name origin. Tatar legends associate it with the word ‘tumen’ that should be translated like ‘ten thousand’. The other idea is that the Russian city took the name of the old fortress Chimga–Tura which issues from Ugric ‘chegmen’ and should be translated like ‘city on the way’. In the past the accepted view was also that the city's name has two words "tyu" (accessory) and "miana" (property) that is to say ‘my property’.

On July 29, 1586 the construction of the Tyumen burg was started near the legendary fortress of Chimga-Tura. The spacious cape was chosen for this building. The cape was limited by gills and the Tyumenka River on the west and by the Tura River on the east. It was situated on the ancient caravan track from the Central Asia to the Volga Region, at the so-called ‘Tyumen runway’, for which nomads of the Southern Siberia battled during many years. Water arteries connected Tyumen with the North and the Far East. The first city's population corresponded to its frontier location. The special privilege was extended to a military men included boyars, archers and cossacks. The first Siberian settlement of Yamskaya was founded here in 1605. The 19th century was the beginning of the city's growth. The city's pathfinders traveled up continent, the first Siberian ships left the city's port. The first Siberian orthodox churches, telegraph offices, water pipes and the railway line were constructed here. By the early 19th century Tyumen was an important manufacturing center of the Eastern Siberia (the key industry was leather). In the 1840s the economic importance of Tyumen grew over. It was connected with the river navigation opening and with the construction in 1885 of the railway line Ekaterinburg – Tyumen. In the second half of the 19th century the shipbuilding, the wood and fishing industries, the carpet weavers’ works were extensively developed here. Tyumen was a big trade and finance center of the Eastern Siberia. One of the biggest fairs in Siberia took place here every summer.

Today Tyumen is the major industrial center, the city of science, culture and sport, the working city. The city's image has changed markedly in recent years. The particularity of Tyumen is the combination of the modern city and the ancient ‘capital of villages’. New buildings and multistory complexes exist side by side to the old wooden quarters with stove heating.
