In 1959 governor-general of East Siberia N.N. Muraviev-Amursky while rounding the sea-costs of the gulf of Peter the Great by ship noticed a well situated bay. He offered to call it Zolotoy Rog (Golden Horn) and ordered to found a military post, later called Vladivostok, on the sea-costs of this bay.
The connection of the post to the rest of the world was kept up by military ships. Shortly after that the first settlers and foreign merchants appeared, small private ships and military boats were built, workshops of the military post were developed. In the late 1860s the post was connected with the rest of the world by telegraph.
Vladivostok was the first witness of the battle of Tsushima. On May 16 and 17, 1905 the remains of our great Fleet came there: the cruiser ALMAZ and two torpedo-boats brought sad news about the defeat of the Russian Fleet in the famous battle.

After the victory in the Great Patriotic War (Second World War) Soviet government, staunch ally, on August 8, 1945 declared war to Japan. Our troops liberated Manchuria, North-Eastern China, northern Korea, Southern Sakhalin and Kuril Islands. Japan didn’t have any real forces and opportunities to continue the war, on September 2, 1945 Japan signed the act of unconditional surrender.
Today Vladivostok is an important industrial center, the base of whaling, fishing, crab-fishing and refrigerator fleet.
