Syktyvkar is the capital of the Komi Republic. The city is situated on the high left bank of the Sysola River (levee). The Syktyvkar's history began in the 16th century. The Chronicles of 1586 for the first time made reference of ‘churchyard on the Ust Sysola River’. At the time the Ust-Sysola churchyard being the precursor of Syktyvkar was a little settlement with the stone St. George's Chapel. This settlement was located at the very center of the migration flows and of the emerging Komi-Zyryan ethnic area.

In the middle of the 18th century Ust-Sysola became the volost center of the Yarensk district of Arkhangelsk Region. In the 1770s Catherine II reformed the administrative territorial division. The immense Yarensk district was decentralized, and a new district was seceded from it. Ust-Sysola respected by Zyryan's population was the most convenient village for the role of its administrative center. In 1780 by decree of Catherine II Ust-Sysolsk gained the status of a city and became the district center of the Velikoustiug Region Vologodsk vicegerency. In 1796 the Velikoustiug Region was abolished, and the Ust-Sysolsk district became the direct part of the Vologodsk vicegerency which gained later the status of Province.

The pre-revolutionary history of Ust-Sysolsk was hardly remarkable and eventless. On August 22, 1921 the little provincial city's history entered upon a new phase. Due to the fact that the Autonomus Komi (Zyryan) Region was formed as a part of RSFSR (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic) Ust-Sysolsk became its administrative center and gained the status of the city of regional subordination. In 1930 the city celebrated its 150th Anniversary and was renamed Syktyvkar that should be translated from Komi language into Russian like ‘city on Sysola’.

Today Syktyvkar is the capital of the Komi Republic, its industrial, scientific and cultural center. The main role in the city's industrial production is plaid by the basic industry. Syktyvkar Lumber Industry (SLPK) is the biggest enterprise in Europe. The present-day city has all modes of transport that insure the reliable year-round transport connection of its residents and business units with the whole regions of Russia and Commonwealth of Independent States. The main mode of external transport is the railway which effects the most part of passenger traffic. The dead-ender line beginning in Mikun has its terminal station in Syktyvkar. Three republican highways start in Syktyvkar: Syktyvkar-Vogvazdino-Uhta, Syktyvkar-Murashi-Kirov, Syktyvkar-Pomozdino-Troitsk-Pechorsk.

Historical dates:

In 1586 Chronicles for the first time made reference of the Ust-Sysola churchyard.

In 1930 Ust-Sysola was renamed Syktyvkar.

In 1936 Syktyvkar became the capital of the Komi ASSR and the city of republican subordination.
