Surgut was founded in 1594 by the Cossack detachment under the guidance of Prince Fedor Boriatinskiy. The advantageous geographical position and convenient waterways made Surgut the center of a big district. In 1785 Empress Ekaterina II established the arms of the city used up to now and depicting black fox - symbol of riches of Surgut.
In the 17th -18th centuries Surgut became one of the strong points of Russian colonization of the Western Siberia.

From the end of the 18th century Surgut gained the status of a district city, but during the period from 1804 to 1867 it became an ordinary settlement. In 1868 Surgut became a city again.

In
1926 ãîäó Ñóðãóò â ñâÿçè ñ 1926 in connection with a small number of the population Surgut was transformed into settlement and in 1930 was registered as part of the Khanty-Mansiyskiy national district.

In the 1960s big oil-and-gas deposits were discovered in the Middle Ob Area. It was the second birth of the city of Surgut. Since 1960 Surgut began to grow quickly and in 1965 it became a city again. Oil pipelines were stretched from Surgut to other regions of Russia, as well as to the European countries.

In 1972 the first Surgut thermal power station GRES-1 started to work, some years later the second power station GRES-2 was constructed. These power stations working on associated oil gas were the most powerful in the world.

Today Surgut is the largest industrial and cultural center of the Khanty-Mansiysk Region, the second city in population of the Tyumen Region. Surgut is the largest transport junction of the district and of the Northwest Siberia. The railway, the highway of federal significance and the largest waterway - the river Ob – are crossed here. An international airport is situated at a distance of 10 km from the city. The main oil pipelines pass from Surgut to the European part of Russia and to the oil-refining factories of Siberia.
