Togliatti is said to be ‘born three times’ and this is the case. The presend-day Togliatti was founded by a companion of Peter I Vasiliy Tatischev in 1737 as a city and a fortress protecting the Russian lands against the nomads. At first the orthodox Kalmycks settled there. Nevertheless, in 1842 tsar Nikolay I issued a decree prescribing them to leave these fertile lands and to move to the Orenburg steppe. The income from these lands was used to the annuities payable to the tsar family.

The city, named Stavropol (Stavropol-on-Volga) at that time, likewise other Russian cities, lived through the reform of 1861, rebellions, famine. In 1921 the local authorities were confronted with a question of the revival of the Stavropol economy. As there were no industrial enterprises in the city, it was decided to convert it to a village.
In 1950 Stavropol became the centre of the construction of the Volga hydroelectric power plant. It was moved to higher ground following the 1953 completion of the dam.

In 1964 the city was renamed Togliatti after Palmiro Togliatti, Italian communist leader.
The city is famous mainly for the automobile production plant ‘VAZ’, the largest in Russia. Built in 1966, it occupies the territory of over 900 hectares, its main conveyor line stretches for 2 km.

At the same time of the ‘VAZ’ plant construction, a new residential district Togliatti-Autograd was built. This was a new birth of the city.

The present-day city differs from its ancestor. Being an energetic, sport-loving, business-friendly city, Togliatti is one of the most substantially developing cities of Russia. It is considered to be a large industrial centre of the Volga region.
Its main industries are automobile production (‘AvtoVAZ’ plant), machinery, chemistry (synthetic rubber, mineral fertilizers, detergents, yellow phosphorus) and building industry.

Chemical and petrochemical enterprises are developing in the last years.

Historical dates:
