Ulianovsk, the center of the Ulianovsk Region, is located on the Volga Upland, on the banks of the Volga and of the Sviyaga Rivers. Ulianovsk was founded in 1648 as the fortress of Sinbirsk on the abrupt bank of the Volga River called Venets. It was a key fortress on the Sinbirsk defensive line. Up to the end of the 18th century the city kept the name of Sinbirsk.
In 1708 Sinbirsk was relegated to the Kazan province, in 1717 – to the Astrakhan province, in 1728 - again to the Kazan province.
Since 1780 Sinbirsk was renamed Simbirsk and became the center of the Simbirsk Region. In the 19th century Simbirsk was one of the centers for trade in bread, fish, cattle and timber. In 1828 the city was connected by railway to Inza and later – to Bugulma.
Simbirsk was fairly called a “noble” city. The best and the richest part of the city with its cathedrals, regional administrative and educational institutions, private residences, public gardens and boulevards was located on the Venets River. Nearby the commercial part of the city was situated, with the center in Gostiny Dvor. The city surburbs were mainly inhabited by poor people.
In 1828 the railway was laid in Simbirsk, in 1913 a power station was built. In October, 1916 a large railway bridge was constructed over the Volga River.
Today the leading role in the economy of the city belongs to mechanical engineering and metal working. The construction of an aircraft-industrial complex has played a special role in the development of the city. The city has cargo and passenger river ports, two airports. It is an important road junction. Ulianovsk is a significant scientific, educational and cultural center of the Middle Volga Region.
The destinies of many eminent persons are connected with Simbirsk-Ulianovsk. V.I.Ulianov (Lenin) was born and spent the first 17 years of his life here.
