In August, 1703 at the entry of the Lososinka River, on the place of its inflow to the Onega Lake, the construction of an iron works and a gun factory began. It was the beginning of the history of the city of Petrozavodsk. The arisen settlement in which builders and workers lodged, was so connected to destiny of the factory that it didn’t have any own name. It had the same name as the factory: till 1777 it was called the Petrovskiy factory. Only in 1777 by decree of Ekaterina the Second the village of workers was renamed to the city of Petrozavodsk.
At the end of 18 - first half of the 19th centuries Petrozavodsk developed as a mining and provincial center. Since 1861 the regular steam navigation between Petrozavodsk and Petersburg was launched, then, in 1860s the telegraphic communication with Petersburg was established.
