Belgorod is the administrative center of the Belgorod Region. This walled town was built by Russian people in 1596 on the right bank of the Donets River, on the white chalk mountain (Belaya Gora). At the time this city was peopled with solders defending the southern border of Russia against Tatars and other enemies.
For a long time small semi-domestic craft industries and commercial establishments determined the Belgorod economic life. Local companies extracted chalk and produced lime, brick, saltpeter and wax.

With the industrial development and the abolition of serfdom in Russia the economical and social life of Belgorod changed appreciably. After the construction of several railway lines such as Kursk – Kharkov (1869), Belgorod –Volchanok (1896) and Belgorod – Sumy (1901) the connection with many industrial centers and neighbor districts was developed. In the 20th century from a district city Belgorod became an important railway junction.

The history of Belgorod was reach in battles. The troops of Belgorod participated in the battle of Poltava, fought under the banner of Suvorov and Kutuzov, and during the Great Patriotic War (the Second World War) demonstrated to the whole world the unprecedented bravery and heroism.
The honor and the visit card of Belgorod is the Military Historical Preserve ‘Prokhorovskoye pole’. The memorial complex was built on May 3, 1995 at the site of the important tank battle that broke down the fascist's resistance and has changed the course of events in the biggest war of the 20th century.

Historical dates:
In 1669 the big striking clock was installed on one of the city towers - Nikolskaya. It was a symbol of recognition of a particular role of the city in state life.
In 1727 Belgorod became the center of the Belgorod Province which included 34 cities.
In 1869 the railway line Kursk – Kharkov passed through the town. This provided a better connection between Belgorod and Ukraine.
On August 5, 1943 the city was liberated from the fascist siege and along with the city of Orel, became known as the "city of the first salute." |
