Volgograd was founded in 1589 as Tsaritsyn city. It probably took its name from Tatar words ‘Sari-su’ (Yellow river) or ‘Sari-chin’ (Yellow island). A Russian settlement with a wooden fortress once stood in the middle of the Volga River at the inflow of the Tsaritsa River to the Volga and served to protect the Volga trade route on the junction of the Volga and the Don River
In the early 17th century Tsaritsyn was burned down and was rebuilt on the right bank of the Volga in 1615. In 1731 due to the fact that the Cossacks formed their troops there, Tsaritsyn was fortified and became the centre of the Volga-Don picket line. After the Crimea and Kuban became parts of Russia, Tsaritsyn lost its military and strategic importance.

After the reform of 1861, due to the construction of railways to central Russia and Donbass (later to Kuban and Caucasus as well), Tsaritsyn was fast progressing as a commercial and industrial centre. An ironworks, a metal- and a woodworking plants, the ‘Nobel’ Company’s oil-refining complex, petroleum storage tanks - the largest in Russia, agencies of shipping companies appeared in Tsaritsyn.

On November 4, 1917 the Soviet government was established in the city. In 1918—1920 fierce battles took place in Tsaritsyn. The defense of the city since July 1918 till February 1919 impeded the planned connection of the southern armed intervention and the eastern front of the White Army. Since June 1919 till January 3, 1920 Tsaritsyn was occupied by White Russian troops.

During the Great Patriotic War (the Second World War) the city, named Stalingrad at that time, achieved the undying fame, the elite of German army was destroyed there. Stalingrad was awarded the honorary title of hero city.

The great battle of Stalingrad lasted 200 days. About 42 thousand apartment buildings (85% of all dwellings), all industrial enterprises and cultural-domestic institutions were destroyed during the war. the Stalingrad Defense Medals were awarded to 750 thousand people. The city was rebuilt only in the fifties.

Today Volgograd is one of the most important industrial centres of Russia. There are many petrochemical, wood-working, engineering and metalworking plants. Volgograd stretches along the right bank of the Volga for almost 100 km; it is the second European city in length.

Historical dates:
In 1670-71 the peasant war took place. The garrison of Tsaritsyn supported Stepan Razin.

In 1691 a custom house was established. At that time merchants traded heavily in salt and fish here.

In 1708 the Don Cossacks commanded by Vasily Bulavin and Ignaty Nekrasov entered the city. Nevertheless they were dislodged by tsar troops that came from Astrakhan.

In 1925 Tsaritsyn was renamed Stalingrad.

On December 22, 1942 Stalingrad Defense Medal was instituted to commemorate the defense of the city against the fascist.

In 1961 Stalingrad was renamed Volgograd.
