Irkutsk was founded in 1661 at the confluence of the Irkuta River and the Angara River. At the beginning it was a wooden burg that grew rapidly and received the status of a city in 25 years. At the first decades of existence Irkutsk was a center of an agriculture region of the Eastern Siberia. From the 18th century industrial arts developed here; bricklayers, furniture makers, spurriers, smiths, gold-workers and silversmiths appeared in Irkutsk.

An advantageous geographical location at the intersection of waterways and roads, natural resource endowment contributed to a rapid development of agriculture and industrial enterprises of Irkutsk, as well as to the population increase and to the establishment of relations with Mongolia, China and Transbaikalia.

Irkutsk became a sort of base of collection and distribution of goods going to the northland and to the east land up to Alaska. The city draws merchants who do not stint donations to the city's development.

In 1686 Irkutsk received the status of a city. In 1690 its coat of arm was approved. The emblem represents tiger that carries a sable in its teeth. The tiger is an ancient sacred animal and it personifies Siberia, and the sable emblematizes wealth of the Region. After that Irkutsk received the status of a city, a new stage of city's development began.

By the end of the 18th century Irkutsk became not only a trading center, but an administrative and cultural center. Public schools, libraries, museums and theaters were opened here.

The construction of the Moscow highway, especially the railway line, contributed to the development of new branches of industry and to the population increase. The first train arrived to Irkutsk on August 16, 1898. This event signalized a brand new turn in the city's life.

From the 1930s a prefabricated construction began in Irkutsk. Heavy engineering plant, aircraft factory, brickyard, cinder works etc. were constructed here. Economical growth of the city contributed to its scientific, educational and cultural development. In 1918 the Irkutsk State University was constructed. It was the first University in the Eastern Siberia.
After the Great Patriotic War, from the 1950s, a rapid development of Irkutsk began and a modern industrial image of the city formed.
The open joint stock company ‘Irkutskenergo’ produces about 7 percent from the total volume of the electric-power production of the country and ensures a national economy of the Irkutsk Region.

Irkutsk played an important role in study and development of the Eastern Siberia, the Far East and the North America.
The city is among the historically settled cities with preserved leveling and building. There are about 685 historical and cultural monuments in Irkutsk. Historically ensembles in the most ancient part of the city such as the Spassk Chapel and the Cathedral of the Epiphany, the Roman Catholic Church and the monument to the Emperor Alexander III, as well as the East Siberian department of the Russian Geographical Union, are of a main interest.

Historical dates:
