Krasnodar (till 1920 - Ekaterinodar) was founded in 1793 as an army camp by Black Sea Region Cossacks (late Zaporozhye Cossacks), resettled to Kuban after incorporation of the Western Caucasia to Russian territory. The head Ataman (Cossack military commander) Zachar Chepiga chose a place for ‘Cossack town’ near the Arkhangelsk redoubt that was laid by the great Russian commander Alexandr Suvorov as far back as 1778. For many years Ekaterinodar was a military town fortress. Ukrainians huts were the first buildings of the future city. Watchtowers raised above settlement situated on the bank of the Karasun River. Oaken forest covering the whole right bank of the Kuban River gathered round the town.

A roll military road passed along the right bank of the river through the Cossack cordons. Famous Russian people passed by this way: deported to Caucasia Decembrist Bestujev-Marlinsky, traveling Alexandr Pushkin and going to Taman Yuri Lermontov. Kuban Region was an economic bridge between Russia and mountain tribes. Tsarist government formed many exchange mints to control this trade. One of the mints was located in Ekaterinodar. The abolition of serfdom Russia embarked on the course of capitalist development, and the city insensibly became a commercial and industrial center. The construction of the railway line Tikhoretsk - Ekaterinodar – Novorossisk at the close of the 19th century determined the city's role as the major transport, commercial and industrial center (bread, tobacco and leather trade; flour-grinding, oil pressing, distillery, tobacco, tanning and other industries).
The metalworking factory ‘Kubanol’ was built in 1910 - 1911 (today this is the Sedin machine tool plant). A refinery was founded on the basis of Maykopskaya oil.
From August 1942 to Februry 1943 Krasnodar was under the German occupation which caused a big damage to the city.
Today Krasnodar is the major cultural, educational and scientific center of the Northern Caucasia. There are many research institutes in the city investigating agriculture (institute KNIICH), oil-bearing crops (institute VNIIMK), horticulture and wine-growing, rice. The Kuban Agrarian State University performs a research in agricultural area which is a priority direction for Kuban.
