Saratov, the centre of the Saratov Region, is located on the right bank of the Volga River in a large basin surrounded by mountains on three sides. Saratov is a big transport hub of the Volga region railway.
The city was founded in 1590 as a fortress protecting the south-eastern boundaries of Russia against the nomads. Its name comes from two Turkic words ‘Sary-tau’ = ‘Yellow Mountain”. It was believed that the city got its name from the mountain that nowadays is called the Socolova Mount. According to majority of researches, at first the city stood on the right bank of the Volga River, near the Pristannoye village.

In four centuries the city lived trough invasions of steppe nomads and devastating fires. Its location was changed twice. Due to its geographical position, natural resources of the region (fertile lands, fish, salt) and numerous protective activities carried out by the government, in 17th and 18th centuries Saratov became a merchant centre and an important transfer point on the Volga River.
After the establishment of the Saratov Viceregency in 1790 and of the Saratov province in 1782 the city was declared the administrative centre and got its coat of arms. The abolition of serfdom in Russia, the construction of the Riazan’-Ural railway (the present-day Volga region railway) and the development of steam navigation helped Saratov to become one of the largest industrial and trade centres of the Middle and Low Volga Regions at the end of 19th - beginning of 20th century. In 1897 its population constituted 137 thousand people. Saratov was referred to as ‘Capital city of the Volga region’.

In 1920-30s there was a rapid growth of industry. In 1927-1928 the largest metal-working plant (former ‘Gaptke plant’) was reconstructed. In the 1930s sand-lime brick works, combined harvester-threshers factory, the ‘Kreking’ plant and other enterprises were founded. Before the Great Patriotic War the enterprises of Saratov produced industrial equipment, bearings, measurement instrumentation and appliances. In 1939 the former combined harvester-threshers factory began the production of aircrafts YAK-1. In 1995 there were more than 130 factories and works in Saratov.
Nowadays the city is known for its machinery, aircraft building, chemistry, oil-refining industry, electrical engineering, glass industry, printing, food processing and other branches of industry.
