The city of Orenburg was founded on April 19, 1743. The city received its name from the name of the river Ori and a German word "burg" (city). But 7 years later after its foundation on the river Ori, the city was moved to the south, to the place of the Berdskaya fortress keeping its name Orenburg. Orenburg was built as a city-fortress, as a strong point of the lines of fortifications protecting the south eastern borders of Russia.
At the same time the city had to become a center of economic relations with peoples of the East, that, first of all, presupposed the development of trade.

The first capital constructions built on the river bank were the Spaso-Preobrazhenskiy and the Vvedensky cathedrals with gold domes announcing to travelers and merchants that they were entering an orthodox city. In 1744 the Kazan Tatars were permited to build mosques in Orenburg. The Gostinyj Dvor facing four central streets was built in the city.

Moscow and Petersburg architects began to build stone houses in the first half of the 19th century. Nowadays the center of Orenburg keeps without changes an ancient lay-out which is an unique monument of Russian town-planning.

Orenburg became witness of Peasants’ War (1773-1775) under Yemelyan Pugachev's leadership. The besiegment of the city by the army of Pugachev lasted half a year. Till now, after high water periods, the Ural River washes out cannon balls. In the 18th and 19th centuries Orenburg was a big center for trade of Russia with Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

With the construction of the railway Samara - Orenburg in 1877 the industry (mainly flour-grinding, tanning, lard and butter production) began to develop. After the Great Patriotic War a new stage of the development of the city began.

New factories were built, among them the works of drilling equipment "Gidropress". In 1966 a large deposit of natural gas was found near Orenburg. It caused the construction of one of the world's largest gas plant which was put into operation in 1974. The development of the gas producing and gas processing industries determined the further growth of the city.

Since the middle of the 18th century the main peculiarity of Orenburg are products from goat’s down. Unique headscarfs from Orenburg have no equal for subtlety of work, originality of pattern, beauty of trimming, durability, ability to keep warmth.

Historical dates:

In 1748 the city became military and administrative centre of the Orenburg Cossack Army.

In 1773 Orenburg was besieged by Yemelyan Pugachyov's Army.

In 1847 the poet T.G.Shevchenko was banished to Orenburg.

In 1938 Orenburg was renamed in Tchkalov, 19 years later the historical name was returned to the city.

In 1966 a large deposit of natural gas was found near Orenburg.

In 1974 the Orenburg gas works was put into operation, becoming one of the largest in the world.
