St. Petersburg is the federal city, the center of the Leningrad Region and the hero city.
It was founded as the ‘window to Europe’ in 1703 by the emperor Peter the Great in the Neva River delta on the coast of the Gulf of Finland.

In 1704 the construction of the fortresses began. Peter the Great and the first Governor of Petersburg Alexander Menchikov decided to make Petersburg the new capital of Russia, which could rival the most beautiful European cities. The architectural image of St. Petersburg is its visit card. Streets and avenues of the city on the Neva River allow us to feel an amazingly strict combination of architecture of various periods and styles. The construction was accomplished by Trezini, Rastrelli, Kvasov, Voronihin, Rossi, Stasov, Kvarengi, Monferran and other architects.
The leading branch of economy is the industry including the dominating machine-building (40%), shipbuilding, power machine-building, instrument-making industry, radio and electronics industry. St. Petersburg is the major center of Russian military industrial complex. The chemical and petrochemical industries, forest, woodworking and paper-pulp industries, as well as printing industry show the intensive development.

St. Petersburg is located at a junction of 12 railway lines and highways. It is the major Russian river and sea port at the Baltic Sea. The city's international airport Pupkovo is a big center of inland air routes. St. Petersburg is advantageously located at the conjunction of sea, air and road main lines. This is the Russian gateway to Europe, its strategic center, closest to the European Union countries.

Historical dates:

In 1703 the fortress at the Zayachi Island in the Neva River delta was founded. It was the origin of St. Petersburg's history.

In 1712 St. Petersburg became the capital of the Russian state.

In 1780 Catherine II finally laid down the city's coat of arm.

In 1851 the railway line St. Petersburg – Moscow was opened for the regular passenger traffic.

In 1870 the Finland railway line was opened.

In 1914 Nikolay II ordered to rename St. Petersburg to Petrograd.

In 1924 Petrograd was renamed Leningrad.

In 1991 the city retrieved its historic name St. Peterburg.
