Ufa is the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan, democratic sovereign state of the Russian Federation. The city is located on tableland at the bottom of the Ural Mountains. The Agidel (Belaya River), Ufa and Dema Rivers begird the city. There are divergent opinions about the origin of the city's name origin, but the most probable that the city's name derived from the Ufa River.

The history of the city started with Kremlin laid in 1574-1586. It was located on the southern part of the cape on the right bank of the Sutoloka River, on its influx into the Agidel River. Practically at the same time the fortress was named ‘Ufa’. This military town slowly became the political, administrative and economic center of the region. The city government was formed. After the Jackery of 1773-1775 years Ufa was no more considered as a fortress. By tsarist decree Ufa became the provincial city and the center of the title Province.

Due to the reach natural resources and mineral raw deposits the Republic of Bashkortostan is the industrial center of the Ural. The territory of the Republic contains ironstone, copper, gold, zinc, lead, aluminum, chrome, coal, natural gas, manganese and crude oil. The first oil flow gushed here on May 1932 and determined the industrial structure of the city and of the whole Republic.

Ufa is the main transport junction of the Bashkiria Republic. Principal railway lines are Moscow - Ufa - Chelyabinsk, Ufa - Orenburg, Ufa - Magnitogorsk. Air and road traffic as well as the navigation by the Belaya and the Ufa Rivers are highly developed in the Region.

Historical dates:

In 1574 the future Ufa was laid.

In 1773-74 Ufa standed the siege of Yemelian Pugachev troops commanded by Chika (I.N. Zarubin).

In 1788 the Islamite Spirit Administration headed by mufti was founded in Ufa.

In 1781 Ufa became the center of the Ufa vicegerency, in 1796 – the center of the Orenburg Province and in 1865 – of the Ufa Province.

In 1890 the Samara-Zlatoust railway line passed through Ufa.

In 1922-91 Ufa became the capital of the Bashkiria ASSR and in 1991 – the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan (Bashkiria).
