Voronezh was founded in 1586. This wooden fortress was built on the high right bank of the Voronezh River. The first mention of city's name is found in the Chronicles of the 12th century (Nikonovskaya, Lavrentievskaya, Ipatievskaya Chronicles), but archeological digs show that the territory of the present-day Voronezh Region was settled from the period of pal eolith. All the world archeologists know the village Kostenki near the city of Voronezh.

In the 17th century the city became the major trade center in the south-east of the European part of Russia.
Peter the Great ordered the construction of a shipyard where the first Russian fleet was built. The first 58-gun battleship ‘Predestination’ that was built in springtime 1700 was ready to head for the Azov.
In the 19th century industrial production, food and processing industries (mills, tallow-melting and butter factories, soap-manufactories and tanneries), trade (bread, cattle, lard, wool, including export) were expanding rapidly in Voronezh.
During the Great Patriotic War (the Second World War) Voronezh was a front-line city lasting about 200 days. After the termination of the war Voronezh needed the reconstruction. Reconstructed city is a good-looking modern regional center playing an important role in actual economical and political life of Russia.
Voronezh is the uncrowned capital of the Central Black Earth economic district.
The specimen of the Voronezh black earth is kept in the Universal Board of Weights and Measures in Paris. The healing water from the spring of Belaya Gorka has the same quality that the water of Baden-Baden.
In Voronezh reserves you can see one of the most ancient animals – Russian musk-rat.
Voronezh is a large industrial city. Its specialized sectors include engineering and metalworking (rockets, air liners, excavators, power presses, tires, household appliances and synthetic rubber). Higher educational institutions, technical and other specialized schools, gymnasia, and colleges make it look like a young student city.
