The history of the Pyatigorsk resort began in 1803 when its thermal mineral waters were recognized by the governmental decree as the ‘healing’ waters. Government ordered to create a resort here. But the area of Pyatigorsk was settled from distant times. The first record of the Bish-Dag Region (five mountains) with a spring of thermal water was dated 1334.

The first Russian settlement near the mineral springs was the Konstantinogorsk fortress founded in 1780. Later the settlement of Goryachevodsk was also founded here. This settlement was the base of the present-day Pyatigorsk. The inrush of water-drinkers grew in 1875 after the construction of the railway line between Rostov-on-Don and Vladikavkaz connecting the Kuma station (today Mineralnye Vody) with the resorts of Kavminvod. With the growth of water-drinkers treatments base the city's construction developed. In 1893 a railway line connected different resorts of the Region. Therefore by the early 20th century the resort activity gathered momentum.

A spring of thermal water Narzan was discovered in Pyatigorsk and the pump room of sulfur water was constructed. Lines of electric lighting, the Lermontov gallery, the ‘Hermitage’ and ‘Bristol’ Hotels and a theater were built here. It was the time of construction of comfortable cottages in Pyatigorsk. The entire cottage quarter ‘Proval’ appeared here. In July 1920 the first Russian Balneological Institute was opened in the city. This big event played an important role in the Russian resorts development. In other cities of the Kamnivody group the special clinics of the Balneological Institute were created. In the 1970s Pyatigorsk began to receive the radon water form Beshtaurgsk deposit trough a pipe. This water has extra-high concentration of radon. The industrial sector of Pyatigorsk is mainly resort-oriented and includes food and light industries.

Historical dates:

In 1803 the resort of Goryachie Vody was founded in the place of the present-day Pyatigorsk.

In 1830 the resort received its modern name (after the five-headed mountain Beshtau, ‘five mountains’ in Turkic or ‘pyat gor’ in Russian, situated near to Pyatigorsk) and gained the status of a city.

In 1841 Lermontov lost his duel in Pyatigorsk (the obelisk with the poet's high relief was put on this place).

In 1913 a theater was constructed in Pyatigorsk.

In 1920 the Balneological Institute was opened in Pyatigorsk.
