Rostov-on-Don was founded in 1749. At first the customs house was built. In 1760 in order to protect the southern Russian boundaries, a fortress was erected. It was named after Dimitry, metropolitan of Rostov and Yaroslavl. Later it was called ‘the fortress of Dimitri Rostovsky’, the Rostovskaya fortress and simply Rostov, and finally, in order not to confuse with the old city of Rostov Veliky (‘the Great’) it was named Rostov-on-Don. By the end of the 18th century, when the region adjacent to the Black Sea was annexed to Russia, the fortress lost its strategic significance. The settlement around the fortress became the city in 1796. In 1806 it was officially named Rostov-on-Don.

An advantageous geographic position of the city (the proximity of the sea, waterways and overland routes connecting the city to the inner industrial and agricultural regions) contributed to its rapid economic development in the 19th century.
Today Rostov-on-Don is a large industrial and cultural centre of the southern part of Russia. The main industries are machinery (fabrication of combined harvester-threshers, equipment for light and food-processing industries, press-forging plants, helicopters, radio-navigation equipment, river crafts); food processing, chemical and light industries. There are some timberworks and suppliers of building materials.

Nowadays the Rostov Region is the leader of industry in the Northern Caucasus. Rostov-on-Don is a big transport hub of the southern part of Russia. There are five trunk railroads, seven highways, an international airport, an important waterway from the Azov Sea through the Don River to other territories of Russia.
